reverse overload ???

Hope someone can help. My friend has a 97 ranger, v6, 5spd, 4wd. He had the automatic lock in hubs replaced with manuel lock out hubs. Now everything works great going forward, but when he shifts to reverse things seem to bind up to the point of smoking the clutch. However it will back up under great load. Anybody have any suggestions??? Bill.

Maybe the brakes are locking up? Might be worth looking at them to make sure everything is in the right place. Did this problem start right after the hub change? Does it do it with hubs locked and free, or only locked or only free? Just a few thoughts.

Is it safe to assume that the tires are all the same size?

same gear ratio front/rear? tire sizes and even wear/pressures? are you trying to turn while backing up in 4 wheel? that could cause drivetrain binding. thats all i got.
