throttle linkage clip breaks

on my 71 F-350 360 / 4-spd
the clip that holds the linkage from the carb to the firewall / gas pedal keeps breaking. This happen to anyone else? I keep a bag of extras in the truck. Never know when it is going to break. gas pedal goes to the floor and I am dead in the water. made it home one day with electrical tape and four stops to cover 10 miles. Trying to find out why this keeps happening.

Are you sure it is installed correctly. If you a have them backwards/upside down, when you move them far enough they won't have the clearance without binding, thus breaking.

That's the clip!!

anyone have a picture of the proper installation? it very well could be wrong. Well that said if I turn it around the other way..... doh! I am pushing down on the clip to lock it on the rod now. I could try from the under side.

There are rights and lefts depending on the situation. Sounds like the linkage is traveling too far and hitting the clip. Might need to make sure your linkage is adjusted properly.

as far as I know it is all original. Shouldn't have been moved. the first clip was a little rusty so that was my first thought. Gone through 2 in a year and barely drive the truck. I will definitely check out the alignment. thanks

Yes, flip it over. It can lock going UP or DOWN. Maybe some installed it wrong years ago?

Here is a google pic:

Replace it with a straight rod and be done with the mousetrap.

^^This. I've done that to every truck I've had. I still have one of those monkey motion Rube Goldberg contraptions sitting in the garage for posterity sake.

If you have linkage problems, they're probably caused by the abomination that is 7A185. This was invented by Mickey Mouse & Rube Goldberg while both were on drugs.

This "Accelerator Shaft & Bracket" has tiny nylon bushings made as part of it that break, they cannot be replaced and the little charmer is obsolete, no one has any.

You can make one for a few bucks with rod and connectors from Fastenall, or you can purchase one like this from summit (Scott drake Part#: SDK-C5ZZ9A702BL) for about $30. I believe dentsides also ran a factory straight rod but I’m sure somebody else can confirm that info.

Scott Drake repro's Ford parts, he is the son of Bob Drake who's been in the hobby since Ike was prez and also repro's parts.

See 9A702 in lower pic. This rod is for 1965/66 Mustang 289, but can be used on others.
