It's been several years since I thought about changing an ECM in an older Ford. It seems like there was a "calibration code" that was important when ordering replacement ECMs back before they were software updateable. It also seems like I recall a substantial change to the on-board diagnostics in Fords between 1991 and 1994. Ford didn't make it all the way to OBD-II compliant by 1994, but I think there was a rather significant improvement in the system that may prevent a 1994 ECM from dropping in to a 1991.
Also, I recall changing out multiple GM ECMs in the 80's and 90's, but I don't recall ever having to replace a Ford ECM. Would you care to share what symptoms you are experiencing or diagnosing you've done that condemned the ECM? Maybe the symptoms will ring a bell with someone more so than knowing what you can swap out. The lack of responses could support my observation that ECMs in that vintage of Ford did not fail very frequently.

found my original. my friend put it in his 95 because the ecm was new and he thought it would work in his 95, i guess the software is different because it didn't work so he put his original one back in and a new fuel pump and it fires right up. but doesn't run good. when we changed his fuel filter black stuff came out. so next project is new injectors.
