High RPM’s

HI Everyone,

I have a 2006 Ford Escape xlt AT v6 ohc. About a year ago the transmission went out and I got it rebuilt aside from some general maitaince (I recently replaced the serpentine belt, front brakes, alt and battery) issues there haven’t been any major problems (besides the transmission). I have taken it back to the shop a few times but there is a lingering parablem.

When you come to a complete stop and step on the gas or when you are merging on the freeway and you step on the gas it reeves up to about 4K rpms but won’t shift. (If you are parked in neutral and step on the gas once again it won’t seem to go above 4pm). If you pump/touch the gas pedal a few times then it eventually shifts and your ok. It’s the only initial phase when you keep traveling at high speeds it’s fine. When you are driving around locally after the initial shifting it works fine. And on the freeway after the initial part it will be fine being above 4K but it’s the initial phase.

There also is this high pitch sound I haven’t been able to locate where it’s coming from and it doesn’t sound the entire time just the beginning.

I have read so much about Mass Flow Sensor or the throttle position sensor. But i have no clue, it’s just starting to be very nervous especially when getting on the freeway.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Thank You,

Christopher

Normal. It's called the "rev limiter".

Thank you about the neutral part. Now I just have to figure out why it’s happening and what to do next.

It's happening because you're mis-using the engine. You're NOT SUPPOSED to sit there in neutral and rev the engine to the red line.

As far as the transmission is concerned, it's a CD4e. I'd have to assume ti may be on its way out (it seems they all eventually do) but there are specific diagnostic steps that have to be done to verify that the shifting concerns are not being caused by engine malfunctions or faulty sensor inputs that are used to manage the transmission. FWIW, if this issue has been there since the transmission was rebuilt, it's probably and issue with that rebuild.

As far as the noise is concerned, someone would have to look at it in person and figure out where it's coming from. It may or may not be related the other symptoms

What I meant about the neutral position I rev it up briefly to hear the noise and see it it went away at a different rpm. I’m not by any means sitting and rev the engine it was one time to hear.

I just wish a light would come on so I could get the code, the only time a light had come on was the very first time when it didn’t shift and I had to pull over and turn car off and the light went away.

Thank you about the cd4e I’ll look into that.

TBH I don't think I fully follow what you are seeing but for sure in cruise I never get over 4k on the freeway, more like 2-3k depending on speed and gear, if you are getting 4k rpms on the freeway, other than in lockdown, I'd suspect you aren't getting one or more upper gears.
