Problem continues, what next?

This is my post from 3months ago. Having a problem with my 2018 Lariat with 3.5 eco engine. When gently pressing the gas pedal there is a ticking noise that seems to be coming from the area of the gas pedal itself or a little higher up by the steering column. It is there all the time, not affected by speed, RPMs, temperature, steering input or braking. If I step on the gas more aggressively it seems to stop. It is really persistent when using cruise control on a flat or slight incline. The CC applies gas lightly to maintain speed and that light pressure really causes the ticking. The noise sounds to me like an electric relay rapidly clicking. Sort of like static electricity snaps. I’ve had it into service and they say it is normal sounds. This truck replaces a 2015 with the V8 that did not make this noise and I assume had the same gas pedal set up as the 2018. Since this is a “ drive by wire” gas pedal I’m thinking there is a bad relay somewhere. My question is where does the gas pedal connect to? Is there a relay under the dash or is it a direct connection from the pedal to the throttle? This annoyance is distracting from enjoying this otherwise really nice truck. Sort of like a mosquito in your bedroom. Doesn’t cause any real harm just ruins a nights sleep. At this point I’m ready to pay for a fix and not worried about it not being covered under warranty. I appreciate any and all advice. Thanks.
UPDATE. Has been into service 3 times and all that has been done is tighten some things under the dash. Needless to say nothing has changed. I’m fairly sure it is electrical in nature not mechanical, ie rubbing panels. Back to service next week again. If they don’t fix problem, what is my next step? Do I call Ford for help or an attorney. Truck is a lease, do they ever swap a leased vehicle for another? I’m willing to take a little $ loss to have a truck I’m happy with

I think the gas pedal; heck all the controls, are the same regardless which engine is under the hood. It would not make sense that those components would be different from engine to engine. The shape, color, etc. vary by model, but the function should all be identical.

So I would ask if you've driven any other 2015+ F-150 to see if the noise is really normal or not. I will tell you that our 2015 F-150 (with the 3.5L EcoBoost) does not make that sound.

You say the sound is like "static electricity snaps". Is it the same sound as a stun gun would make, but a little less noisy? I know the pedal input sensor is supposed to click on and off since the system is drive by wire, which basically just means it's an electronic system. Some sound is normal, but if you drive another vehicle and it doesn't make the sound, I think it could be the pedal input sensor getting stuck, just a wild guess. It's probably one of those annoying things that won't hinder the operation, but it is annoying. You may want to post a video of the sound, it could help someone help you figure this out.

Yep Jeff, that is exactly what it sounds like. Now, where is that sensor located? Does the accelerator pedal plug into a module farther up under the dash? Thanks for any info you can give me.

I realize some noises can be annoying. Especially when you can't find where the noise is coming from. If there's no mechanical or electrical problem, the only thing I could recommend is to buy or borrow and sound detection meter to isolate the exact location and cause of the sound.

I don't know much about that sensor, but I believe it is a few inches above the accelerator pedal. I would go to a parts store, have them look up the Accelerator input sensor (input may not be in the description) and the computer should give them a diagram of the exact part. I would also research the heck out of it online (Google is your friend). It sounds like one of those things that is a nuisance but may not affect the operation of the vehicle. However, I would let the dealership know that the sound is driving you nuts and other vehicles don't make the sound, so you want it to go away. If they can't replicate it on their own, record it yourself so you can show them.

The acceleration control sensor is part of the accelerator pedal assembly and can't be serviced separately. This sensor is connected to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and contains several redundant sensor assemblies for the sake of safety. Any problem in any of them would set a trouble code. There isn't enough voltage involved in this circuit to make any noises. The fact that you state that the cruise control can cause the noise when accelerating gently rules out the pedal assembly. This isn't your grandpa's cruise control. There are no cables pulling on throttle linkages. The CC also sends a signal to the PCM in order to maintain speed. If you step on the accelerator to override the CC, the PCM compares the electronic signal from the pedal sensor to the signal from the CC and responds when the pedal signal exceeds the CC's signal. All electronic, nothing mechanical except the pedal itself.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. I’ll be giving this info to the service rep on Thursday. Now for PupnDuck. Where is the PCM located? Is there any other modules or relays in the connections from the pedal to the throttle? Anything else under the dash on the drivers side that could be the source of this clicking sound I hear when the gas pedal is gently depressed?

does your truck sound like this?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNDH...ature=youtu.be

mine does the same thing, doesn’t do it while on CC. Only when depressing the accelerator and usually it is most prominent with light pressure on the pedal.

The PCM is under the hood mounted to the firewall on the passenger side. It is the module with the two multi wire large connectors going into it.
