I am wanting to regear my f250 as I do tow some but not near as much as used to. It has 4.10s and I would like to go to 3.73 or 3.55 as I do mostly high way driving now. I have the stock ford 10.25 and the Dana 50. I have found the ring and pinon for them on summit racing. My question is what else do I need to do this, and do I need a a speedometer gear to do it? I get good mileage but I am tired of the screaming and the extra wear on the motor and everything else at such high rpms. Any help would be appreciated thank y’all
Just asking, and dont mean to be offensive, but do you know how to set up a ring and pinion in its carrier? It's not just swapping gears. If you dont and have to hire it done it will be expensive. Your easiest bet would be to check with a salvage yard for a complete rear axle housing, and front carrier if you have a 4wd. If you go that way you can only get 3.55s, 3.73s weren't offered in our trucks. 3.55s will lower the rpms around 350 rpm, depending on speed.
The rear axle speed sensor takes care of your speedometer, no gear.
Yeah I know how to do it. Me and my dad can handle that. The speed sensor is good news for me. I found 3.73 gears for it on the Internet for the dana 50 and the rear from summit racing. But I would be okay with 3.55 too.
Regear why? You will never recoup any savings with it fuel economy-wise unless you drive the truck for easily 200,000 miles. I bet a Gearvendor divorced OD would be a better option...AND far easier. I would do it just for the noise reduction in the dually. Plus a GV will always have value.
On my 97 I have 3.55's and on my 99 I have 3.73's. I thought about changing the 97 to 3.73's but didn't have the skill sets I did not want 4.10's due to the reason you explained and I don't tow much. Overall I like the 3.73's much better than the 3.55's and not a great increase in RPM's over the 3.55's. IMO a great compromise between 3.55 - 4.10 ratios. Guess that's why Ford introduced them in the 99 year model.
Well thank y’all for helping me out I’m gonna think on what I’m going to do. The main thing I needed to know about was the speedometer and how I was gonna get that right if I do regear it. Glad our trucks have the speed sensor now after I spent many years cussing one in a f150 I used to have lol. Thank y’all for your help
