Replace a 460 with ??? help!

Don't get me wrong they are definitely not the easiest motor on fuel. But my dad has a 1978 F150 with a factory 460 and just changed the intake and carb and he is getting better mileage then I am for sure. He also debated on doing the swap to the 300 six but every time he starts running numbers he figures its just too much cost he doesn't ever think he will see back. So the 460 just gets regular tune ups and he keeps driving it because she just keeps running like a top. He does hate that it doesn't get better mileage sometimes so I do understand where you are coming from.
