No California only issues a registration sticker for the rear plate. Even though I had to fill that form out that the gross vehicle weight was between 10,001 and 15,000 pounds, my vehicle is considered a personal use vehicle. Bottom line is the state wants the fees.

If you only paid $1000 to register your F-450 you got off cheaper than us in Maine. We pay and excises taxes every year based on the MSRP. I paid several thousand $'s less than MSRP but every year I have to pay right around $1500 just in taxes and another $25 for the plate fee, plus the registered weight based on what I tow. So each year it cost me $1855.00 to register my F-350 DRW in Maine. O and on top of that I pay $4.40 at the toll booth on I-95 when a F-350 SRW only pays $1.00.

Basically, take an existing F450 Pickup, pop off the badges and put F550 badges on it with say a 16000lb GVW sticker in the door...
If you don't want a paper limited F450, then don't buy the pickup. Buy the C&C and put a bed on it. Most people who are over the 14k GVW in a truck, have outgrown the capability of a pickup bed anyways, and have gone with a flatbed or custom hauler bed.

825ft-lbs will pull anything you can hook to it.

A tuner can easily bring the numbers back to, or well past the 1,000ft-lbs mark...even an emissions compliant one.

When I bought my F450 in CA, the dealer forgot to get it weighed and I had to go to a certified scale to get it weighed. I had put a camper shell on, a tool box loaded up and had the factory 5th wheel hitch. When i pulled on the scale, it said 10,040. The weigh master was sharp and told me to get out of the truck to get it under 10,000. Fortunately, I only had about a 1/3 tank of fuel. I sent the certificate in reading 9,840 and avoided the extra $332. You might want get it weighed and see if you can get that changed.
