F550 Pickup

Had a discussion with a friend today... Everyone seems to agree that a F450 Pickup is a lot more truck than the F350, but on paper can haul less because the truck itself is heavier due to stronger components and de-rated to stay in class with other manufacturers.

Curious why Ford never took the exact same truck, maybe with slightly more spring, maybe not, slapped F550 badges on it and sold it stickered for it's true capabilities. Seems link a no brainer to me as the truck is already designed, etc.

Thoughts???

I would really like them to do this but for likely different reasons than you. I want them to do this because they would then likely offer the high trims like the platinum and limited in the 550 which is what I really want. I don’t want it for the bed tho because I would take the bed off and put on a hauler body anyway.

Ford is probably pretty hesitant to do this because they don’t know if it will sell but out of competition they might soon. There is really good evidence that the new redesigned ram will offer the limited trim in all of the chassis cab trucks. Because of this ford hopefully will follow suit.

Higher trims was one of the reasons that I was thinking actually, another being the non-de-rated engine....

That payload capacity of 12,000+ sure would be nice.

The 5/60,000 warranty on the drivetrain not so much...and with less power.

66 gallons of fuel OEM in a dually would be awesome.

Some states have major issues with F450 registration fees...wonder what the F550 would do to them in those states.

We were not talking about matching the capability of the F550 C&C. Just more than the paper limited F450 Pickup.

Basically, take an existing F450 Pickup, pop off the badges and put F550 badges on it with say a 16000lb GVW sticker in the door...

Gotcha...sorry...I thought you were trying to dress up a F550 to F450 options/refinement. I like it either way!

Get the 450 King Ranch and add camper/snow plow prep. Register it to max axle capacity.

What would that net?

Well I was actually referring to a full capability 550 with 19,500lb gvwr. I briefly considered buying a 550 xl and a wrecked 250 platinum with a non damaged cab and doing a cab swap but I don’t know if I want to deal with all that.

Mine is registered for 32k GCWR. One slight caveat it does require a Class B license and you have to stop at scales. I had a nasty issue here in California and I lost in court about 6 years ago so I abide by the dumb laws (I got a vehicle classification ticket when I put the CM flatbed on my F450). Anything classified commercial (Not defined as a pickup with pickup bed) over 8k unladen or over 10k GVWR is supposed to have a declaration. Its dumb and plenty of people get away with it but I didn't. For anyone who wants to up or lower their weight class in California see attached.

Yup. When I registered my F450 in California, I had to mark GVW Code A 10,001-15,000 lbs, and incur the extra $332 in fees. The result is my registration at renewal was over $1000. California and their dammed fees....

Wow! How often is renewal? Annually? Every two years?

Every single freaking year! Welcome to the People's Republic of California, where nothing goes un-taxed or un-regulated.

Just curious did you get the door reg tags that show the weight and the 3 stickers for the year?

I have the commercial plates that all pickups in California receive, and just a regular registration sticker. It looks no different than the stickers for my cars.

I got stuck with door tags. Just curious do you run your registration on the front plate as required for commercial vehicles over 10,001lbs?
