Another transmission thread

Have a 2000 Excursion, stock(ish) with 4r100. Towed with it about 1200mi with no issues, no OD light blinking. I parked the truck for about a month and it sat until today and I fired it up. Started right up and it loped for a second. While it was still loping slightly the OD light started blinking (in park) and stopped after 5-10 seconds as soon as the idle smoothed out. Truck shifts just fine. Hasn't always been the smoothest shifting transmission but it is unknown if it is the stock transmission. Truck has 252k miles on it.

My question is....Can the transmission throw a code without blinking the OD light and then show up later and start blinking? I can't replicate it and nothing happened while towing that threw a red flag.

One thing that worries me is that it is a 2000 without the radiator/atf cooler and no temp gauge. Fluid looks good, a little old but not burned or stinky. Have been meaning to change the radiator out but for a 2001.

Thanks

Sorry cannot help you with the code question since I have not had to deal with any codes yet, but if your radiator is still OK would it not be better just to add 6.0 AT oil cooler instead?

I added one of these, switched to Mercon V and added Baldwin BT839-10 external AT oil filter few years ago to my E99.
So far so good.

No, it can't.

Why do you think it didn't have a problem when you started it up and the light started to flash?

The only way you are going to be able to fix this is by getting the codes read. The places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.

I'm worried there is a problem. It just didn't do anything out of sorts while driving it. One thing is the shift lever is more difficult to move than my other 4r100 truck. Sometimes you have to push the shifter further up into park for it to start also.

The hard to move shift lever is often caused by a corroded Transmission Range Sensor (TRS.) It's located on the driver's side of the transmission. It is the part with the wiring harness attached.

If you're going to try and fix this without reading codes, you're going to spend a ton of money and not get it fixed.

TRS was corroded, hit it with a little bit of lubricant and freed it up quite a bit. I am out of state for work so I have to track down someone who can scan it. Does it store codes when the batteries are disconnected? After it threw the code I unhooked the batteries to clean off a little bit of corrosion I had noticed.

No, the codes are gone. You'll have to drive it to get the codes to set again.
