Cam phaser and timing chain issues

Cam phaser and timing chain issues
Do all years of the 5.4L engines have the cam phaser and timing chain issues? I'm looking at a 2008 Expedition with 161k on it and I'm wondering should I be worried about it?

Well maintained 3v engines are far superior, so see if there is records available. With 161k on it it should have had 3 spark plug changes by now and hopefully was maintained with oil changes. The engines are known for sludge buildup on the drivers side due to the PCV. Listen for noises, exhaust manifolds crack and break studs. Listen for ticking from the phasers.

Short answer is yes. At 160k I would guess it’s already had timing chain work and phasers. If you hear a rattle from the engine on start up it is a timing chain issue. Don’t believe the people that say it’s normal because it’s not. They are great motors if the common issues are taken care of and it’s not a ridiculous amount of money to do so.
