I have a 6/2003 model year 2003 F250 Super Duty with a 5.4 V-8. Everything I am researching shows two different automatics potentially in this, each using a different fluid type. I cannot locate a tag on the side of the housing, and the pan looks like it could be either, as they are both 20 bolt and shaped similarly. The filters look different, but not wanting to drop the pan to see just yet. I do beleive it is the 16valve engine, which leads me to think it is the 4R100, but not entirely sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for the help. But are we sure on the Mercon V? Seems to be a huge debate that has me just as confused.
In 2006 Ford changed MERCON V to be compatible with transmissions that used to take MERCON. MERCON was then discontinued. MERCON V is the correct fluid for all 4R100s.
If you service the trans yourself, Mark Kovalsky has provided a GREAT step by step procedure. I've followed it and it worked great for me. See link below.....
I still use mercon or dex merc wolfshead synthetic.. I'll use that till it or me dies.. just got a new valve body from diesel stop and they said Mercon.
Not in the mood to flush anything.. Pan and fluid always clean. Even though Mercon v is prob a better fluid.
