Resurrecting this post from the grave i have some minor progress to report. After soaking it in penetrating oil for days and days, applying heat and cold, hammering at it like a lunatic the distributor finally gave in an popped out. I wish i had recorded that satisfying pop on video when it finally jumped out. Here a few pictures of the culprit:
Needed some extra force look at all that grime and dirt
I have installed the new distributor yesterday and did attempt to get the timing right. After setting initial timing (without advance) to about what i believe might be (its what the marks are saying, not necessarily true) 8 deg before TDC the engine was still running a bit rough. I adjusted it for sound and ended up somewhat higher... but relatively smooth sounding....
Then I took it for a spin around the block to test it under load but there was a noticeable hesitation when accelerating from low rpm... After increasing the idle speed some it got better but, was still there... Somehow i thought maybe it is related to the idle/mixture screws and tried to adjust these but failed to correct the issue.
At the moment I am thinking, that I need to check first whether the zero marking is really TDC or whether it has shifted and then start adjusting the timing.
But maybe there are two different issues - Timing and Carburetor/fuel supply...
Despite not having solved everything - it felt great to hear the engine running again and taking it for a spin. The engine felt like it had much more power than before, even got the tires to slip some on takeoff... So the carb rebuilt and dizzy have done something.
Hopefully, the remainder is just a tuning issue...
Niko,
You are now getting to the point where it's running fairly solidly and into fine tuning the engine running, right? So be open to other possibilities, such as the engine having excessive wear and tear or other similar items. Just thought I might put that out there.
There are plenty of tests yet to do, that will narrow down what the issue is, with the dizzy set and the carb adjusted.

Tune it by ear. Advance the timing until it pings under acceleration. Then back off in small increments until it stops.
Have you checked the accelerator pump or pumps for fuel spraying?
