2002 Ranger 4x4 extended cab with power locks and windows.
Have ventshades and like to leave the windows down an inch or so. Pressing the passenger window switch momentarily accomplishes this quite well. However, the driver's window has a "one-touch" feature which results in the window going ALL the way down if you depress the switch momentarily. This then requires raising the window back up to the desired height.
Small inconvenience, I know. But does anyone happen to know of a practical way to eliminate or bypass this feature?
I feel like I have been automated right into an inconvenience - again. (Guess my age is showing, huh?)
Thanking you in advance.
Just keep the button pressed for more than a second and it will not activate the Auto function, also you can tap it twice and this will also override the Auto function.
Some other car companies use switches that have another position past "roll down" for the auto down feature. That makes it nice because you can get used to just tapping it all the way down to get the auto down or just pressing and holding gently for regular roll down.
I also hate the one-touch down feature. It's a HUGE annoyance if you simply want to put a "crack" in the window to allow a small amount of air in. Down, and then back up...everytime. If you hold the button down to "override" the one-touch down...by the time you let off the button the window is down farther than you wanted anyway.
If anyone knows a way to bypass this feature it would be helpful.
Well, at least I'm not the only one annoyed by this "convenience" feature.
I appreciate all the input. Hope someone comes up with a simple solution.
Considered the possibility of pulling the inner door panel to see if the driver's window switch could be replaced by a duplicate passenger window switch without the feature, but with all the power features/switches on the door panel, I'm thinking it might not be worth the effort/risk envolved. (not particularly adept at pulling inner door panels on this late model stuff; and consequently not very fond of the idea.) Besides that, it's probably a module containing BOTH switches....
If anyone gains additional information regarding this subject, please, please share it with us.
Thank you.
Yeah, not only that, but sometime between '99 and '03 Ford deleted the "power retention" feature too...so now I MUST have the key in the ignition to use the power window controls.
I guess they don't test these things in the real world before they build them anymore.
What's really messed up with Ford is that on my Mother's 02 Taurus, the switch has two positions. The window operates normally in the first position, and the "auto-down" feature isn't activated unless you press the button (hard) past the stop and into the second position. I really prefer that set-up. I too am annoyed by the "one touch" feature in both my Ranger and my Mustang. I can't ever get the window where I want it on the first try.
Well, I've started practicing the suggestion by "Ranger95" of double-tapping the driver's window switch, and it works pretty well. With a little practice, a person can stop the window pretty close to where you want it, but it still requires an effort of mild concentration; it's not just a "natural" or ergonomic executable.
Intend to remain on-the-lookout for a better solution.
Thanks to all.
If I had to take a guess...I'd say the computer, or GEM controls that feature. It's not in the switch itself because the switch has one position for "down". So it would be difficult to "override" it. Guess I'll just have to live with it.
I wish my truck had the auto down feature. My fiance's Olds Aurora has it and I love it. No annoyance whatsoever, if I want it open just a crack I just hit the button twice and it stays right where I want it. GM's is set up a bit differently though, you have to hold it down for a second to activate the auto down, but I have driven several Fords with it and like Ford's better. I guess it's just differnce of opinion.
Generation Edge has some discussions about adding auto-down to the passenger's side. I would think that with the modules in question, you could get one that's just a regular up/down and install that for the driver's side. Here are links to some of the relevant threads:
I could be wrong on this but my mom's 95 Windstar has this same feature. I was reading through her manual and there is a way to disable it. I am not sure if the Rangers have a way to do this or not but just an idea! Good luck!
