Has anybody replaced the timing chains on the 3.5L in the Explorer platform? Looks like quite a job, though doable, in the F150 but there is a not more space to work there. Would love to hear from anybody with experience if its possible to do without pulling the block in the explorer. To my eye it looks like is probably doable in-vehicle if you pull the wheel, fender skirt and maybe brakes for side access.
I did it in vehicle in a taurus, pain in the rear but it can be done. Would immagine the explorer is very similar. Was hard to work at it from top, side through wheel well and underneath...good luck.
I suggest that while your in there to do the water pump as well and the 4 camshaft solenoids/timing actuators since you will have it all open anyway.
I'd recommend dropping the engine before working on the TC...
Funny you should ask... Mine is at the dealer for a "stretched timing chain", water pump, and new tensioner/ timing piston actuators on our 15' Sport 3.5L Ecoboost... Apparently, changing the oil at under 8,000miles religiously isn't enough being 2,000 miles plus sooner than the Manual calls for on all 3.5L engines. The Ecoboost 3.5L needs to be changed before 5,000 miles with full synthetic 5w-30 oil and as often as every 3,000 miles with 5w-30 conventional or blended motor oil. Who would have thunk that? $2500 later I owe the dealer tomorrow and my eyes have been opened. And yes, I can turn wrenches with a lot of em' but dropping the engine in my garage for a 2 day job isn't an very viable option for us... But that is exactly what the dealer said they had to do and they texted me pics of my engine, out, sitting atop a scissor style engine jack with the body 6' above on an H-Jack this evening was also eye opening and hurt a little/bizarre to me. They even had the Tranny off and leaning against a table...
