18 Expedition Max - Load Leveling

New owner of a 18 Expedition with HD tow. I will be towing near the limits and want to ensure I have a level load. There is very little after-market suspension support for the 18 Expy (as in none that I have found) and so much conflicting information. I have heard...
  • You cant use air bags on the Expy
  • You already have airbags on the Expy and it will auto-level itself
  • You can only buy a spring insert to help

What is the best way to ensure my Expy is near level under heavy load?

Use a WDH if your towing heaving. I picked up a 18 exp max with HD tow also...I plan to use my WDH on it when towing. It worked well with my Raptor so Im sure it will work with the expedition.

You absolutely require a weight distributing hitch. Don't even consider towing without one. For sure you will want to take your entire combination fully loaded across the CAT scales to get your real weights and to make sure your WDH is set up properly. The expedition is a lot more picky to setup than a pickup because of the shorter wheelbase and lower payload capacity. In my opinion, making sure your steering axle has sufficient weight will be your biggest concern, which you can accomplish without messing around with the rear suspension.

For starters, here's the 2018 Ford trailer guide:

Edit: added some details.

Yes, I will be using a ProPride hitch and will remain within payload limits. Just looking for a way to add some additional support should the load cause some squat.

My 2010 Expy did not have any sort of load levelers and was perfectly fine with our ProPride hitch. Our 2016 had the auto-leveller, and while it would raise the back end up some after a few minutes, it never brought it back to what the unloaded height was, and from all I’ve been told you don’t really want to do that, you just want to get close to what it was. The 2010 required a bit more tension vs the 2016 and both vehicles felt pretty close to each other when towing. I think you will be OK with your Expy and that hitch and personally I would not worry about adding anything else to level your Expy.
