Transmission towing tips

Hello to all. I will be towing a jeep cherokee on a car hauler trailer with from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale with my 06 Ex 6.0 with 160,000 rounds on it. Any transmission tips would be helpful especially when steep grades are encountered. I know back in the old days manufactures recommend not to tow in overdrive.

Keep it in Tow/Haul mode and in Drive. Let the transmission choose the gear.

It is a good transmission, more than up to the task.

Either put it in tow/haul and drive or don't put it in tow/haul and drive. It will be fine either way. The transmission was designed to work just fine with tow/haul on or off. You decide which way you like it better. I prefer tow/haul on when towing.

Your Excursion does not have a way to turn off overdrive, so don't worry about that.

I assume the 06 was a typo since the last Excursion was made in 2005.

When towing that light of weight behind a stock 6.0 the transmission would be the least of my worries. The 5r110 is a stout transmission.

You'll have more trouble remembering that you are towing it than the trans will have taking care of the work!

Agree with the others, you won’t even know it’s back there. Just make sure you have enough tongue weight and you will be fine.
