Cruise Control..where else to look?
Hi all!
Have a 2003 Limited V10, 227K and the cruise stopped working in the middle of a ride back home from the Catskills. Everything was fine moving along at 72, then Hey! I'm slowing down! Hit the set speed button on the steering wheel, nothing. All the other buttons work on the steering wheel and the indicator lights up on the dash. Looked at the master cylinder and didn't see anything wet as was mentioned else where. What do you guys think?
Thanks.
Tony

I don't have the info handy, but there's a test you can run from the driver's seat by pressing the buttons on the steering wheel. (I'm sure it's posted on this site and a search would find it) When you run the test, it ends with a the servo unit cycling.
In the case of my 2005, the buttons tested fine...but the servo unit under the hood had failed. I got a new one and the problem was solved. I later found out that a Taurus servo is the same as the Excursion unit, but lot$ cheaper. If memory serves, the bracket needs to be swapped over. Again, a search on this site should get the info.

Wires looked good, and even replaced the steering wheel control/switch since I had the airbag off. Switch on master cylinder replaced even though it wasn't wet, and there was no recall for my X. Been reading some about the actual servo being bad but don't know where that is to check. A poster had mentioned this and most Fords use the same actual servo just need to change the bracket Any help on that would be appreciated! Its a V10

The test procedure is:
If that checks out a good system (one flash at the end), then I'd say you should look at the CC cable on the throttle body.
1. Begin static portion of self test by pressing and holding speed control off switch.
2. Turn ignition switch from off to run. The cruise indicator on the instrument cluster will flash once to indicate the speed control module has entered diagnostic mode.
If the cruise indicator does not flash repeat steps 1-2. If the cruise indicator still does not flash, diagnose the cruise indicator or the off switch.
3. Release the off switch
4. Within five seconds of turning the ignition switch to RUN:
Press the on switch.
Press the resume switch.
Press the coast switch.
Press the set/accel switch.
NOTE: the on switch must be pressed within five seconds after entering the diagnostics mode or the speed control module will return to normal operating state and self-test must be repeated.
The cruise indicator will flash when each switch is pressed. While performing self test. Press each switch in the order described while observing cruise indicator for a flash. Note any switch activations that does not cause a flash; that switch has failed the test and the whole switch assembly needs to be replaced (they can be disassembled and cleaned, but this only has about a 10% sucess rate. They are cheap enough at JYs to justify just buying a replacement.).
