So I pulled the carb back off yesterday to clean the idle air screw and its passage. Found the screw to be at 1 and 3/4 turns which I thought was odd. So I opened the bowl and found the gas to be brownish and not real clear. Which makes me think when we put the new gas in it mixed with old gas and is causing the carb not to work right. Just a theory. So I pulled the screw and it was black and covered with something. Cleaned it all up good and put it all back together. Set the screw at 1 3/4 turns and she would try and start but not idle. Kept messing with the IAS and at one time around 2.5 turns she idled for about 10 or 15 seconds then lugged a couple times and shut off. I'm convinced it's a fuel issue. I know the pump is pumping but no idea if it's enough. I know the truck sat for some time but am unsure of how long. The fuel gauge is not registering so I'm probably looking at dropping the tank to fix that. My thoughts right now are drop the tank drain it and clean it and then go from there. That will only take time and some cleaner. I've got a friend who is a local mechanic that I off road with that I'll take this to to check the timing for me if that is needed.

Did you change the fuel filter? It is on the carb.

There can be deposits of varnish tucked away where you cannot reach with spray and a rag. Every time fresh gas touches it, it will dissolve and and crystallize somewhere else. I resurrected an 86 that sat for 8 years. Wouldn't idle well until I soaked the carb in a bucket of carb cleaner for a few days.

I did spay it out good the first time and it was yellow brown at first. This second time I cleaned I sprayed it down again and it was clearer than the last time. I'll definitely replace it if I go ahead with the tank cleaning.

Why don't you get a kit and rebuild the carb? "Rebuild" may sound intimidating, but all they give is a bunch of gaskets and small parts. What you will mainly be doing is taking the carb apart, and cleaning out all the little holes and passageways with your spray can. The kit gives you all the gaskets and stuff you need to put it back together. Just spraying cleaner around the interior of the carb is not doing much to unclog it.

That gas just looks nasty.

I think my best course of action here is to do the carb and clean the tank/fuel system.

If you want to run the motor after you clean the carb again use a small gas can and along rubber hose.
I put the can up on the inner fender and the rubber hose in it to the pump on the motor.
I do it this way because I don't want fuel going bad in my tanks after cleaning them wile I am rebuilding the rest of the truck but I need to move the truck in & out of the garage at times and that truck is too heavy to push by my self!

So I did a little testing this afternoon. I put a can with a line to the pump like suggested and it still would not start. I also checked for spark and it was sparking on all 6 and from the coil. So I guess that means my carb needs a rebuild. Looks like I'm ordering a rebuild kit.....

Cool--make sure you clean the tank out and change filter so you don't run that junk through your soon to be clean carb.
