Put in a new headlight and it immediately turned into the old headlight. Cant tell from the picture but its like the reflective surface has either been coated over or flaked off, same as the old headlight. The light still works but is noticeably dimmer. The only change to the system has been the relay upgrade.
Any idea what is causing this?

The problem is sylvania. Shytvania sells garbage anymore, and their headlights are poor quality crap. It is now the 21st century, and shyster companies like shytvania are flooding the market with cheap flimsy crap products which mostly don't work well. I guess they can get away with it since they are a big corporation, and the average customer who they ripped off has no recourse.

I have had numerous bad experiences with shytvania headlights, most recently with my truck. I bought a replacement extravision headlight at Autozone, and the POS burned out its low beam within a couple of months. I tried smacking it with my bare hands, and the glass cracked!!! I tried another from O'Reillys, hoping for a different batch or whatever, and that POS cracked when I was tightening the retainer ring!!!

Then several months later, my other light burned out so I searched in vain for a replacement from anyone other than shytvania, but they have a monopoly over all of the big box stores, and I couldn't find anything else. So reluctantly, I tried another one. Fast forward a few months, and another low beam burned out.

This time I searched harder, and saw that Walmart carries GE headlights, but when I got there, they only had shytvania as well, but theirs weren't extravision, they are the basic bulb. I haven't driven it at night yet, but I don't have a lot of faith in my new lights. They have the same cheap too-thin glass which cracked on the extravisions, and probably have the same inadequate filament.

And this round of bad experiences with shytvania reminded me of a time about ten years ago when I bought a set of extravision bulbs for my old '92 Mustang GT. Neither of those bulbs lasted six months either!

So don't buy from sylvania. Their products are typical 21st century, offshore, lowest-bidder, crap, and the con-artists who run that company should be ashamed - but I'm pretty sure that they think that they are doing a good job. It's up to the general public to point out their misconceptions.

Screw sylvania and all of the scammers who ran that company into the ground!!!

I think you are onto something there, the other headlight is a GE and I think it was in there when I bought the truck 20 years ago. I guess I will go on the hunt for a another GE.

 

Heads up. But the rectangle headlights are available from Ford and Napa in a heavy duty version. The lights used on medium duty trucks take a beating in the tilt hoods. I paid 24.00 each at Ford.

 

Called a couple of ford dealers and they didn't seem to know anything about heavy duty , but I did find these at a great price as well. Think Ill buy 4 of them, that should last me for the rest of my life.

Tell them you want headlights for a 2014 F650 or a 2010 f550 base XL.
