Heading up the mountain full of luggage and adults. Not pulling anything. Torque sent an alarm that said "Engine oil temp too high". It was 221*. I pulled over and was not spewing coolant. I could hold my hand on the coolant reservoir. The fan was running at normal speed. I never heard it kick in like it does when it is working hard. Should I assume torque is wrong or could there be an issue? The tell did go down after we got over the pass.
I always thought that engine oil was OK up to 250 or so. Your engine coolant cools your oil so it should certainly be higher than the thermostat you have in it.
I do not know the threshold of the oil temp. I have never monitored it. That is why I wanted to check. I used to have the 203* thermostat, but do t remember what I put in when I go the International water pump.
The oil jets spray the underside of the pistons to move heat from the pistons to the oil and out through the oil cooler.
I keep my oil alarm at 240f and regularly see 230f pulling a light trailer in the summer.
221 isn't a big deal. Oil temp will rise more than coolant temp as the engine starts working harder, pretty normal. And while it won't take much to hit 220, it'll take a fair bit more to hit 230, a lot more to hit 240, etc. The oil cooler is way smaller than the radiator so it's easier to make the oil temp rise, but as long as it's working right it'll be difficult to actually get the oil too hot.
I actually have that one. Stays in the drivers door pocket, i grab it first thing when we stop while towing and check trailer bearings, then truck's (more or less), then tires

I believe the stock International water pump thermostat is 205*. With the after market 203* thermostat it starts to open at 190* and should be fully open at 203*. On my 97 I think it had the factory 190* and upgraded to the 203* when I replaced the water pump. That made a Hugh difference in performance when warm but the oil temps did go up also, but never saw more than 215* in summer hot months with no towing. And the fan was roaring big time.
