Single usb?

If I wanted to convert the single usb plug under my dash to a dual, can I just plug the dual in and be good? Mind you, I have the whole harness from dual usb plug all the way to little plug at the end that plugs into the black box behind the radio. Thanks

Try it out and see if it’ll work.

What are you trying to accomplish? Charging 2 phones at once or connecting 2 phones to the Sync?
I DOUBT youll be successful connecting 2 smart devices to the Sync / infotainment (wired connection).

At best youll only be able to use one at a time.

the factory usb outlets are 1.2a (slow) charge rate....it can barely keep up w/ running Waze & streaming music (to the point I dont use it).
I installed a "hot" (2.4a x 2port) charger in the console outlet and run the wire under the console lid.

No problem keeping 2 devices changed (regardless of the applications that are running).

Well, I got a center console outof a lariat to remove my jump seat. It has the dual usb outlet, I only have the 4” sync screen, my phone is connected by Bluetooth. I just planned on using the usb setup for charging. In reality I wanted to keep my little led flashlight plugged in and charging just Incase I ever need it, and either a phone or whatever else in the second one if needed. I plugged in the dual usb to the little black box when I had the radio bezel out when I swapped my console in, plugged my phone cord into either outlet and didn’t get any indication or power to my phone at all. So I wasn’t sure if it would work plugging the dual in or I have to keep my single usb and put that in my console. Maybe I’ll go with your idea and run a dual outlet, if it’ll fit into my center console factory spot and wire it in regularly

My basic XL has I think a total of five 12v cigarette outlets (3 front, 2 rear). Do the higher trims not have these? If they do, will these not work for your needs, or are you looking for something a little cleaner?

You will cut the current in half by using some kind of a USB splitter. It will take all that much longer to recharge the devices connected up to them. Your best bet would be to use one of the 12v power ports and get a USB charger adapter for it. Something like this:

. It will give you plenty of power to charge devices.

No I do have those as well, but what I’m getting at I suppose is, since I swapped a center console into my truck, it has the dual USB ports inside the cubby hole. If they’re there...I’d like them to work as intended. That’s all. Plus I could leave my led flashlight plugged in and inside the cubby for if I need it etc.

I have not gotten my 2019 yet and my 2002 F250 does not know what USB is, so I can't say whether either USB port in the console you swapped for would be able to be used for sync as well as charging...

You might be able to get away with using a small USB hub inside/behind your console to plug the two ports in the console to the single USB port in your truck. Ideally, if it were a powered hub, you would then have more power for each of the two USB ports. Providing that electrical power for the hub would then be the concern.

If you really wanted to have a simple splitter on the cheap and you have the electrical skills, you could create a Y-cable with one of the ends that goes to the console connectors be connected to just the power pins and not the data pins. Then there would not be any issue with potentially two devices serving up digital signal to the audio system. You would still be splitting the available current between devices.

If this was my situation, I would probably use one of the USB adapters I mentioned before and either get a 12v power port or simply soldier wires to the adapter's 12v contacts, to wire it into the audio power circuit, and put that inside/behind the console, in order to have a clean looking console installation with plenty of power for the second USB jack.
