If it came with a 3G alternator stick with that, the older external fan alternators can start fires! Good rebuilds from the auto parts stores or dealer are your only decent options

Right now my options are New- AC.... Rebuilt- Ford, Bosch, Remy, AC, and some other brand i can't recall. I think the Remy is out of there just on the fact i never seen Remy until not so long ago. Out of the others... roll of the dice?

I'm familiar with all of them except the AC. They are all good brands. You might include Delco as well unless the Remy is the DelcoRemy. I went with a 130 Amp Ford 3G alternator when I upgraded mine on my 92 460. Very happy with that.

I forgot about DelcoRemy... now there is AC Delco, and Remy as stand alone companies...I think i will order the motorcraft and be safe!

Bosch is pretty decent, ditto Ford / Motorcraft --- I'd just get a new one as 50% of the rebuilt stuff lasts (maybe) a year or two

How do you tell the difference in the alts?

I replaced the alt on our '92 with what the parts house said was the one for that year. It came with a new pigtail, which I did install. Is this one that catches fire? How about for the '94 we have?

Thanks!

2G alternator has an external fan.
And as pictured in the previous post, a 3G has an internal fan.

I can't comment on which brand is best for you...probably play it safe and say Motorcraft-but-if you have an AdvanceAuto Parts near you, they will guarantee most bolt-on engine parts, ie: water pumps, alternators, p/s pumps, etc for life. Or at least they used to...might be worth checking into it.
