Hey guys I ave a 78 f250 with a 460 swap. When its warmed up it starts really hard. Timing is set, reflective blanket on the starter. Is there a specific starter I could switch to so it won't have this issue?
Just out of curiosity, are you running headers? Or stock 460 manifolds?
Guessing headers, but wanted to be sure.
Is the 460 starter the style with the cover over the Bendix spring/arm/thingy (I think that's what it's covering) or the type with a piggyback solenoid already attached?
That might make a difference in what the others recommend. I'm not sure if there is an alternative, but there might still be.
Overly advanced ignition timing can do it, though undersized cables can be a factor. Without being able to see it the advice would be make sure they aren't the crapppy generic replacement cables like the parts houses sell these days in the plastic blister pacs. Total junk. Might be OK for a small 4 cylinder, not a big V8. Just sayin'. Maybe you know this already, in which case disregard.
I would upgrade to 0 or 2 guage wire for the battery positive and negative as well as the starter lead wire. You can order all the terminal connector lugs and wiring on amazon.
Hey Don,
Adding to 400v8f250's post - Starting at the battery > check both cables - make sure they are both 2 ga. or 0 ga.; both cable to terminal connectors are the solder on or crimp on terminals (NO clamp on with 2 small bolts !); make sure that both cables are the shortest usable length (no extra length); same for the cable from the starter solenoid to the starter. Check the ground cable to block connection - should be directly to the block, not to a bracket. Check the battery size and CCA rating - the battery should be the largest that will fit in the battery box and have a CCA rating over 700 amps. Be sure to check the alternator belt for correct tightness and no slippage. Any truck or farm parts or repair shop should have the ability to fabricate the correct gauge and length cables (well worth the cost) The universal auto parts store cables are minimal quality on a good day.
Have a Happy New Year
