Mine would be runed the first day after I flipped it down in to my receiver hitch I leave in my truck 24/7. Chevy guys must not ever have a hitch in there receiver for that thing to work.
If the step part is removable (or could be opened with the tailgate up) it would make a great 5th wheel tailgate too. I'm liking what I see.
I find my tailgate step to be pretty much useless. I'm 58yo, 5'9" tall and can hardly hike my leg up enough to use the step. The easiest way for me to get in the bed is to hop my butt up onto the tailgate and then get up from there.
Just so you know, it's not much better at 5'10". I use the tire and haul myself in over the side. What could go wrong there?
If its not your style no one is making you buy it.
it looks like a good idea to me, might be better than what ford has.
the good thing is the more competition between the big three, the more features and techonolagy we ALL we see.
i can remeber back when the most HP you could get in a pickup was 185 from a gas engine, no pickup diesels available yet, and you BRAGGED if you got over 10mpg.
You had to buy a dually to get a GVWR over 10,000lbs, and the brakes wherre just barely adequate for an empty truck.
A fully loaded truck was AC, AM/FM radio, and intermintant wipers. Power widows and lock where not available on a pickup.
i remember your truck would have to shift down to second to pull a hill EMPTY, add a trailer you might be at 25mph in first gear on a long 6% grade.
things have gone a long way!
i love all the techonolagy on my 19 f450 Platinum.
by far the safest most capable truck i ever owned.
This is where trucks are headed. They are soccer-mom rides for the suburban family. That GM tailgate was designed in a Walmart parking lot for getting groceries and cheap TV stands in and out of it.
Absolutely F-in ridiculous how complicated they made that thing. I want to see it work after the first load of gravel / sand / mulch that is put through it. NO tailgate handle either! You are now relying on electronics to open your tailgate. Now you have to have your key on you, or the truck turned on to open the tailgate too. That red button area you push to lower the step will be so full of crap that it will be unusable too.
I can't stand the tailgate on my 2018. The top of it is 8-fricken-inches thick!
i prefera piece of plywood for a tailgate anyhow so i dont have to cry when my latches freeze which is never.
Try using your truck in thick ice fog when it is -40F. Moisture, frigid cold, and mechanical parts do sometimes refuse to play well with each other. This tailgate was made for a target market. I'm glad not to be a part of that market.

I wish we could go back. Your post is making me want to start ordering parts to get my '88 F350 back up and running. Old stuff just plain worked (and worked how you wanted it to), and if it didn't...anyone could fix it on the side of the road with a basic tool kit.

One of the things you are forgetting is they DID break down and NEEDED to be fixed on the side of the road.
All the stuff people say about the new stuff is exactly what was said about the self starter (electric starter) electric head and tail lights, hydraulic brakes, automatic transmissions, alternators, seat belts, air bags, electronic ignition, fuel injection, power windows and locks, air conditioning, basicly everything we take for granted on today's vehicles.
Time marches on.
It wont be long till people EXPECT the car to tell them they need stay in their lanes or to apply brakes, NOW!
