Should I run them? Tire question/ thread

Hi,

I recently picked up a set of rims with Cooper Discovery HT3 not AT3 tires in pretty good condition. Anyone running them on their 250 or 350? How do they do in wet or snow conditions? Are they worth trying out? Is it more of a let's dismount them and post on an on line sales forum for coin towards new rubber? I have a few ideas in my head but I want to get that gut check before going forward.

Looking forward to the responses.

You make them sound used. I would check the born on date if older than 5 years I would not mount them. Also make sure they’re Load E.

Hi,

To clarify, I purchased the rims with the tires on them. The previous owner claimed low miles on the tires. 2 of the tires have nearly all the tread depth. Measures out at 13/32 where new was 14/32" The other 2 were about 11/32". I mainly bought them for the rims as they were Lariat 6 spoke 18 inch. I currently have the 18 inch 7 spoke chrome clad rims. I am not a fan of the look. Lariat rims are more my style. I am debating to keeping the HT3s that came on the lariat rims. One of my thoughts were to have the tires dismounted and flip them on line. Sell the other rims I have for the truck. Maybe have the Michelin's LTX AT2 swapped over to the Lariat rims. Those are not too bad maybe 50% worn. I just wanted to know if should bother with the HT3s or not. I had a set of AT3s which mixed results with. Hence a gut check.

‘This is how you determine how old those tires REALLY are, tread depth is irrelevant if the tires are over 5 years old.

CO F350, I understand date codes. I know where you are going with your thought pattern. The tires are 5 years old. They were made at the end of 2013. I know your are using the 5 year mark as a guide for replacement. Most vehicle manufacturers states 6 years from date code on the tire. Completely understandable.

I have 2 current thoughts here.
1) Costs more. Swap the Michelin's from the old rims to the new rims. Run them until used up. The truck may become more of a DD due to some vehicle changes.
2) Just run them until it was time to replace. This is why I asked how well did the HT3s handle in weather conditions.

Both tire sets would be nearly spot on when replacement time comes. I figure Michelin's would be on a replacement schedule at the end of next year anyway due to thread and tire life.

I would run them. If they do not show signs of weathering,, sidewall crazing/cracking or visible damage from potholes or curbs, I would put them on as is.

I tossed them on this morning. The wife gave her blessing to whatever I wanted to do as in purchase new rubber or try these out for awhile. She actually said " I cannot believe you didn't want to buy something this go around." in a joking sense. So I installed the wheels on the truck and took it down the highway at speed for a couple of miles. No weird vibrations or feels. They tracked pretty much straight on. No issues. I took the truck through several side streets and back roads without issue as well. They felt good. I also left the radio off for a road noise test. No issues there either. So we will see how well the HT3s handle in any wet weather. If anything, I will hang on the LTX AT2s for awhile and decide what to do with them. Maybe have my neighbor dismount the tires and rims and keep the tires around for awhile and sell the 7 spoke rims. Who knows.

Just the final outcome update.

I sold the 7 spoke with Michelin LTX AT 2s for a descent money. Kind of had a bidding war on them. Looked at putting a set of Ridge Grapplers' on to the truck. Pull the trigger there. Kept the Cooper HT3s. Should have them sold in the next day or 2. I was going to keep them if I didn't like the RGs but since the RGs seem to be a really nice tire so far, my workshop space is going to be a priority. So they got posted on line and have had a ton of responses. In the end, I covered the cost plus some on the new rims to me and the new tires to boot. The CFO was very happy about that. Per the wife, the truck looks good and it didn't cost as much as you planned for.
