Hi I have a charging issue with my 97 explorer I believe my brushes need to be replaced in the alternator. is it possible to replace the voltage regulator brushes with the alternator still in the vehicle? or do I have to remove the alternator completely?
I don't think its possible to do without removing the alternator first. It should be fairly easy to get outta there. Why do you think it's not charging ? Have you checked it with a voltmeter?

A reman alt will set you back about $150, new voltage reg prolly $50 if you can get it. If this volt reg is internal just buy a reman, to much trouble to get put back together right. Make sure you check everything else, belt, pulley, alignment and bracket
Good luck
