Charge cable routing

Posted this over in the Excursion sub-forum, but didn't get much response, so I thought I'd try here.

I'm having challenges with some battery terminal clamps on my '01 7.3L Excursion, so I thought I'd go ahead and just replace all the battery cables while I'm at it. That then got me thinking about replacing/upgrading the power cable off the alternator. Between the routing of it, and the wiring loom covering most of it, it's not an easy task to follow the routing of the alternator cable. After it leaves the alternator, it goes across the valley of the engine and then disappears. At that point, does it go down to the starter/starter relay? Basically I'm trying to figure out the proper length of the cable. I will likely just cut the old cable and leave it in place.

thank,
Herb

Herb,
I left the stock wiring in play and added a 4/0 cable from the alternator back to the firewall, along to the passengers side fender well, then a fuse, then to the passengers battery. I also added a 4/0 cable from the passengers side to the DS battery. I bought a pre-made ground cable and went from the alternator mounting bracket to the frame. I can get you lengths if you need them.

Thanks John. I guess I should have considered leaving the stock cable in place and attached, and then just supplementing it. One of those, why-didn't-I-think-about-it moments.

I can figure out those lengths easy enough. I would be interested in the length of your ground cable, and where you attached it to on the frame, and what fuse setup you went with.

thanks,
Herb

‘The ground cable is IIRC 18”, I removed the alternator mounting bolt on the DS, then added the cable, slide bolt through the eyelet and reinstalled the bolt. I ran the bolt along the air intake and to the frame, removed a bolt, cleaned paint off area and reinstalled that bolt. I believe I used a 6ga cable.
