Lurch on deceleration?

I've been driving my new-to-me '95 F150. 4X4, E4OD, 5.8. I've noticed that at certain speeds, there is a noticeable lurch when you let off the gas. Especially noticeable above 45-50 MPH. At low speeds, it just coasts along. Tranny? Driveshaft? Differential? Or just drive it and don't worry about it?

Hmmm- No ideas? Maybe 'lurch' isn't the right term- shudder? Seems like other Ford trucks I've driven just kind of coast when you let off the gas. This is almost like downshifting.

That's helpful. The truck is 23 years old, I've only had it a week, and I know nothing of the maintenance that has or hasn't been done. It basically needs to be gone through from one end to the other, but until spring, repairs will consist of emergency fixes only. I don't have a heated place to work. That's why I asked; I'd like to know if it needs to be addressed right away, and what area to concentrate on. I may crawl under it on the weekend and see how the U-joints are.

Does it feel like slack in the driveline? My truck was doing something like this, where it would sort of clunk when I let off the throttle, then clunk when I got back on it. I forgot about it after I installed a diff locker this summer, so I suspect it was wear in my spider gears. Certainly check u joints, and all fluid levels. If it's a new to you truck, never a bad thing to change the fluids and filters throughout (as well as wear items, like u joints), that's what is meant by "do all maintenance first". If the problem persists then it's potentially more serious, if not, then your truck is road worthy/trustworthy. Maybe it sounded rude but he's a very helpful member, I'm sure he was just trying to help without typing for 10 minutes.

By the way FLgargoyle, I like your Red Green quote in your signature line. I miss that show.
