i have a 1992 f-150 with the 5.8 v8 efi. as i was driving, my truck just started shuddering when shifting gears and when going about 75mph. i really have no clue as to what it would be other than the transmission or rear end. i would just like to know what is wrong with it so i can fix it or send it into the shop. thanks.
Keep in mind I am no tranny expert, but this doesn't sound like torque shudder. Usually torque shudder is very light and happens during light acceleration when the TC has locked up. Usually you will feel this between 40 and 50mph, depending on your gearing. Essentailly torque shudder is a problem in light accleration at near freeway speed. At least that has been my experience with it.
75mph sounds too high for this, and the TC is not locked up during shifts, so I would not suspect the TC.
I would lean to bad clutches or old fluid. Might also be U joints starting to go.
When you get the shudder, drop the tranny to neutral. If the shudder stays, then it is either tires, differential, tail shaft or U joints. If the shudder goes away I would suspect the tranny.
One other thing... if you have 4x4 be sure to stay in 2WD mode. 4x4 often will make for a noisier and more "shudder like" ride.
The lock up clutches are chattering. I am not sure if they are in the trorque converter on these models or not. At higher rpm and speed, when the converter goes to lock up, it is shuttering( slipping ) if you lightly let off of the gas a little bit when it starts, I bet it will quit and go ahead and finish locking up. My Windstar does this after i've been on the highway for about 2 hrs.

I would try changing the fluid and filter first. You can drain the torque converter on these too. Just spin the flywheel around until you find the drain plug. It should be near one of the bolts. I would add 1 qt of Lucas transmission additive in place of 1 qt of fluid. This stuff can help older clutched last longer.

I ran a fleet of these when I lived in Tx. You could almost depend on it happening right about 165-170k. My trans guy told me something about a sprag that goes bad. Sometimes when they go, if they're bad enough, they would wipe out the case. Not cheap either, I was spending 1200 apiece on the ones that didn't destroy it. The others were trash. I know you don't want to hear good news like that but, I think I would start looking for a good trans shop to get a real diagnosis. If the news is that bad maybe you can come by a good used one. I don't remember mine doing it when shifting gears but, that was a while back and I have problems remembering what I did yesterday.
alrighty. i reckon i will change my fluid and if that doesn't help take it to a transmission shop and if need be start looking for a new tranny. thanks again
