Those instructions crack me up. If I could get the damn thing into 4X4 HIGH, I wouldn't be reading the manual on the transfer case motor in the first place. Do they specify how this is done manually? I ask, because mine failed - and I'm getting ready to replace it this week.
It doesn't matter what position it is in when you remove it, you can manually switch it to whatever position the motor is in before you install it.
I tested my new transfer case motor before I installed it - the light popped on. So... 15 minutes later, Stinky's in 4X4 in the driveway. Don't buy a Dorman part - get reman or OEM. I bought mine at the shamrock auto parts store. I'm not putting anything expensive or shiny under there - they started salting our roads in the winter a few years back.
I did electrical tests before I called mine dead. There is supposed to be a winding for forward and one for reverse (in/out of 4X4), and my forward winding read open. The transfer case motor will make the light on the dash not work and it will throw a code. The ESOF hub locks give no indication when they fail... other than slip and slide.

So i get no code what so ever, only code i get is for my glow plug relay which i have on a switch. but the only thing i know is if i lock my hubs and turn the dial to 4 hi nothing happens. no light comes on the dash. but what youre saying is it'll make a noise when it's trying to engage?
