Like most laws, it's a fun read... but you can just jump down to table 1 on page 310 - "REQUIRED MOTOR VEHICLE LIGHTING EQUIPMENT OTHER THAN HEADLAMPS - Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles, Trucks, Trailers, and Buses, of 80 or More Inches Overall Width". The 5 cab lights are the combination of identification lamps (middle 3) and clearance lamps (outer 2). You'll notice that the law also requires them on the rear... that's why duallys also come with the 3 red lights under the tailgate.
I have much to learn Sensei. That's exactly what I was looking for...I owe you a beer.
Our SRW are spec'd at 80"...which would put them in the "80 or more" camp. Wonder if they might be just a TOUCH under...in order to qualify. Guessing the legal dept at Ford has done their homework, and that's why the SRW doesn't come equipped with all of those lights. Either way, thanks much for the info.
They look boss - get 'em. My 2019 with 3.5" level and 37s barely fits (maybe 1/2 to 1" to spare) in the automatic car wash and even being sprayed with high pressure water from 1" above the lights, I've got no leaks so far.
An $85 must have for me. They are "clearance lights" so you can see if your going to clear the obstacle above you. Garage door, tree limbs, or whatever. I've had 3 other super duties with them. No problems with them. Makes the vehicle look like a truck. Should be standard equipment.
This law is also why the Raptor has 3 lights in the grill, clearance lights in the front fenders and the three rear marker lights in the 3rd brake light. The cab lights were a must have for me when I searched for my single rear wheel. Luckily I was able to find the exact truck I wanted and did not have to wait through the ordering process.
I had the same debate with myself when I ordered my truck and finally decided to order it with the cab lights simply for visibility in low-light and dark conditions. With all of the distracted drivers out there I want to be as visible as possible.
Hmmmm. Wonder if that width includes mirrors extended.
Mirrors do not count in fixed body width measurements (since they can generally move on trucks and buses) - only parts of the body that are permanent in placement like a dually fender, or in the Raptor's case, the flared fender panels.
