Originally posted by Jarlaxle Then it's not a PI--it looks like a low- to medium-rise iron intake. It was free...my friend said it was a PI intake...which it seems it is not. I don't have a clue what the casting numbers are...never checked.
Hmmm... maybe it's a CJ manifold, does it look like this?
The casting number has been chalked, it's C8OE-9425-C
Jar, could you go take a look at the manifold you have and read us the casting # ? we're all dying to know what it really is.....or can you take a picture of it ? FEs never came with a spread bore carb that I am aware of....at least not in the usa. Canada or mexico or Austrailia, who knows. I wonder if maybe you have a P.I. manifold for a 429....some of those had a spread bore carb, where made of iron, and don't stand very tall. DF
My friend just returned my e-mail--the casting is C3O(unreadable)-and everything after that is illegible. It looks like the carb pad was milled to make it seal, & the casting number was damaged. The "o" could be a C, a G, or a zero, or a D...he says it's pretty hard to read.
Wouldn't "C3XX" be a 1963 intake? Hmm...off a police 352 or 360 maybe?
It' a square-bore design, & I was wrong about the carb--he currently has a 750 Holley, not an Edelbrock.
C3 is a '63 casting code. It means it was designed in '63 but could have been cast later than that, the date code tells when it was poured. There should be a letter after that, possibilities would be a A, O, or X. If it's an O, then it was for an intermediate or compact car, a full-size car would be an A. Problem is, in '63 all the production FE's were in full-size cars and they were all A's. Boy I sure wish you could get a pic of it.
Production 428CJ's all got iron manifolds. The 428PI's got aluminum ones until '68.
Some clown ground most of the "bumps" and almost all the markings off this thing...no idea what it is. It does NOT have the cylinder numbers on the runners.
But is 20 hp worth $200-$300 ? With that said wouldn't you be better off with a NOS spacer plate for a little more money. You can change HP jets and go wild with the spray. You would make more HP/TQ with the stock intake.
