If I remember correctly and I may not, the Ignitor 2 has a variable dwell feature. Point systems were strictly mechanical so the amount of time the points remained closed and therefore coil recharging time (dwell) was fixed and unchangeable once set. The dwell spec selected overall was a compromise for best running over a wide operating range from idle to high RPM.
What happened in points and in practice with Ignitor 1, also a fixed dwell, is the coil tends to run pretty hot at lower RPM or idle, especially when running without a ballast. The oil filled coils don't always stand up very well to the heat, the Ignitor 2 should run a standard coil a little bit cooler. For most people an Ignitor 1 with a good quality round coil should give great service and reliability.
