Unkown problem with 02 Escape automatic

I've always been a Ford lover so I bought a used 02 escape, automatic, 6 cylinder. The check engine light isn't on, but when I put it in gear, the overdrive off light begins flashing. I can still drive it but the shifting feels like it's sputtering. I've had a transmission go out and it doesn't feel like that. Read about the input and output sensors causing similar issues so I changed them but it didn't help. Two different code readers haven't picked up anything. The guy who owned the car before me had 3 different size wheels on it when I picked it up so it clearly wasn't taken care of. I'm so confused about what it could be. Any ideas welcome!

You need a better "code reader", one with "manufacturer-specific" support. If the TCIL flashed, the PCM has stored fault code information that needs to be retreived.

Given the odd-sized wheels it may be worth disconnecting the battery for 10mins to reset the ECU shift learning and trying again, could be confused by the ratio disagree info from odd wheel sizes.

Failing that it could be internal or external (range sensor switch maybe). CD4E's do have a reputation for the 2/4 band breaking.

I appreciate the input guys. I'm gonna get it hooked up to a better reader and get new (same size) tires on it before driving it anywhere. I'll post the problem when found.
