Starting problems, if i turn the key i only get a clicking sound. Previous owner tolt me he replaced the solenoid/starter relais several times, so the relais is my first suspect. At the moment ive got an Fordson tractor solenoid, placed by previous owner, but it worked fine for the last 5 months.
I measured some things and im not sure if the relais is broken or maybe the starter itself, maybe you can help:
Battery: 12,6 Volts
The relais is clicking when i turn the key (in and out, again and again) and also when i short the S contact directly to the battery
When i do a diode/beep test i get a beep on the wire to the starter and ground
when i short the wire to the starter to 12V it normally should strat wright? I only get some sparks..
One wire around the solenoid is loose, has been loose as long as i know, i looked it up and it should be some kind of resistor. Does it affect the starting when not connected? Or can it be the cause of the solenoids burning out this fast? any ideas?
Sounds like the starter is bad. Pulling too many amps. You didn't say which engine you have but Ford starters are amperage hogs when they are in good shape. I would pull it off and have it checked.
Put a test light on the cable to the starter, when it clicks it should have power. If it doesn't it is the solinoid, if it does, you either have a bad round or a bad starter. If you put a test light to the starter case and it lights when you get the click it is a bad ground.
Its a 352, if the starter is bad, can it happen at once without any warning?
When the relais is on i dont get 12V on the output, does it correspont to a bad starter? Can i check it somehow?
Yes the starter can die an instant death. But they usually just slowly wear out until they can't do their job anymore. Keep in mind you are dealing with a piece of machinery that could be over 50 years old.
Don't overlook the battery. Take it to your local auto parts store and have them do a load test. This is the time of year where the weather changes and allot of them start to fail....

In a pinch, you can try banging on the starter case with a hammer, and see if that helps temporarily. When starters get worn out this will help them limp along for a little while. If the starter, battery, and ground cables are original/old they should be replaced with heavy duty cables.
If you remove the starter remember it has 3 bolts( you can’t seethe one on top)
also if it leaks oil where the starter bolts to the bell housing t could interfere with the ground
Congratulations. Just so you know it is spelled like "relays". You've got it VERY close but it looks like you are part French-Canadian...lol. Or whatever NL is....Netherlands?
