My son is in the Air Force and he got a 1994 7.3 turbo diesel truck, They changed everything they could since the truck had sat for a while, in changing the valve cover they didn't get the last bolt on tight and it severely leaked, so when they got to California after 2 months of severe leaking we changed the valve cover gasket, even though she was a beast to start before, she wouldn't start at all after the valve cover job, Yes the temp dropped from 74 outside to 50, now we have to have the block heater on for 1 hour and she will start, I hear the relay clicking when i turn the key but we checked one of the glow plugs and it isn't working, what is the easiest plan of attack.
did you check to see if the relay is any good? 90% of the time a no start condition is simply a bad relay, as long as the truck has the proper motorcraft ZD-11 glow plugs in it.
if someone put anything other than motorcraft ZD-11 plugs in it, than i will say the glow plugs are burned out and need to be changed again.

well no I picked the cheapest glow plugs i found, the relay I hear it clicking as it should so i am assuming it is working but I do know one glow plug isnt working. I was concerned that the amount of oil that was being sprayed under the block maybe that coated everything with oil, but this truck was hard to start before we put new plugs in BUT... it was easier to start the next day for about a month, DO YOU THINK i should replace the glow plugs and see, I am trying to attack the easiest and the cheapest first. I have been told replace the wire harness and NAWWWW I am not thinking it is the wire harness and that is about $500.00
Cheap glow plugs will swell in the head and you will not be able to get them out unless you pull the head. Under valve cover harness is not $500. After you hear the click measure across the glow plug relay (big wires) you should have near 12 volts for up to two minutes.
Have a read threw this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...ke-thread.html You will find every thing you need to know about the GP system. As for the cheapest GPs, they have been known to burn out after just 1 or 2 cycles of the system. Use Motorcraft ZD11 plugs only

really???? swear??? OMG I am going to go try the glow plugs although it is 42 out side, I hope I can get them out, GEEZ..,.. this is hard for being 61 yrs old but Heyy I am going to do it, thanks and watch for my return information....
When I first found these forums, I was using the 90 IDI as a daily driver, and I thought that "use Motorcraft/Beru plugs only" was a bunch of hype. I was replacing the glow plugs at least once a year on it. Then I lost the motor to cavitation, and replaced it with a Ford turboed drop in. And after a couple of years I realized that I hadn't had to replace any gps, so I looked at them. Sure enough They were Motorcraft, which are still in that truck.
