Wondering what aftermarket units people have installed and how difficult of a process it is? I called a local shop and was quoted 3-5hrs and a "special" price of $429. Don't know if that's a good deal or not for a basic 1/4mi range 4-button Viper unit. Don't need it to fry bacon in the morning (although.....not a bad idea!), but just need to be able to start the rig in my kitchen while still in my PJs. This is for a 2000 V10 4wd. Appreciate any suggestions.

Reason: just because
Couple of years ago I had a Compustar system put in, alarm, remote start, and Drone Mobile cell phone service. Best $1000 I ever spent. Pricey, but I love being able to start my rig from my phone at any distance, and I know right away is the alarm goes off even across town.
I just had a Viper system installed on my 7.3 that takes a while to warm up in the cold mornings of VA. Very happy with this remote start+security system so far. I did get the one step upgrade where the remote is a 2-way setup and tells me (LED lights up, chirps etc.) when the truck is running, or other faults etc. I paid 650 all inclusive, but then the prices are a bit higher here, than some other places, in Northern VA.
I have remote starts on everything I own from my 97 Explorer -up I refuse to get into a cold car/truck. That said I have a good buddy who owns a shop that mainly does remote starts and he is a DEI dealer. I've had a Viper remote start/alarm on my Excursion since buying it in 2010, now it's a vastly outdated system but still works very well! Claimed 1 mile range (would have to be perfect conditions) but it works for me in 99.5% of the situations I'm in.
Phone capability these days is WELL worth the investment, when combined with a security system you can GPS track your vehicle if it was stolen and lock/unlock or start it anywhere you have cell service.
is that $429 just for Remote start or also with alarm?
I had the Viper alarm with 2-4 button remotes, and 1-way remote start installed a month ago for about $320
I know quite a few people that have installed the Compustar lately. It seams like every Tint shop and stereo shop will install one. I know BestBuy seems to always offer base system installed for $250. I am sure add $100 to get more than 1000' remote. There is a rats nest worth of wires to install, so make sure you are trusting a shop that won't just use wire taps and electrical tape to wire in 2 dozen wires under your dash.

That quote was for the 4-button (lock, unlock, start, alarm)
Helo all, about to purchase a 7.3 excursion soon. I have been doing a lot of reading up and a remote start is one of my first potential mods and I am sorry for thread jacking, but do these aftermarket remote start/ alarms effect the use of the keypad on the door?

Thanks
I installed a Valet alarm-remote start when my 2005 was new. It's still in use. I'm sure modern systems are better...but at least in my use...it has plenty of range, etc. Has a 2 way remote, etc.
Back on topic...in my case...I can no longer use the door keypad if the alarm is set and the keypad has no way to disarm the aftermarket alarm.

thank you for the quick response.
I’m debating just doing a remote start system and leaving the lock system all factory.
What are yalls experience with the key pad system? Is it a convenience? Or would you recommend a complete alarm, remote start system?
I have seen a few a few threads relating to a possible factory remote start installed by ford. Is that something that would be worth looking into?
