I haven't been on for awhile , I've been enjoying and driving the heck out of my 49 F1 . I've been slowly fixing everything that needed fixing. Yesterday I took out the drivers side window and have a new one to put in. But before I do that I want to fix the drivers side door lock. The problem is it doesn't lock like the passenger side does, I pull up the handle or at least try to and nothing ! Now the passenger side pulls up and I can lock that door with the key lock from the outside that I installed . I noticed that the guts of the drivers door handle bracket is not the same as the passengers, in fact the passengers door does not open from the inside at all but it locks ! Am I missing something here ? Shouldn't they be the same on both sides. So as it is I can lock the passenger side from the inside or outside but no way can I lock the drivers side. I hope this isn't too confusing, Help !!
Hey Old Yella,
Welcome Aboard! The door locking process isn't very straight forward.
Our '50 worked by pulling the handle down to lock the drivers side - then you
slide across the bench seat & get out on the passengers side & lock it from outside.
My understanding is they were designed that way so you wouldn't parallel park & exit the drivers side into traffic.
You'll have to put some new parts into the drivers side to get it to lock as well. We just
gave up & put in modern Altman(?) locks on our '50 that work with a key fob …
Hello Ben,
On my 49 the drivers handle only opens the door when pushed down. I'm about to give up myself I've been trying to figure it out for quite awhile. I'll try to locate that Altman lock you mentioned. Thanks.
Hey Old Yella
Here is a very recent thread where they talk through
the same issue with the driver's door lock. There are several solutions.
Let me look around a bit - make sure you have alternatives.
Okay I have fixed my passenger door lock. I bought a key lock but there was no retainer clip for it ! I searched and asked everyone to no avail. Then my neighbor a model "T" guy came over and told me there is an allen screw behind the rubber molding ! Put the lock in tightened the screw, Done. Now the drivers side we took it all out and it was welded so as to not lock, why I don't know but I'm replacing that part.
The door handle has a detent in the mechanism that locks the door. It gets worn out and doesn't do what it should. There is a spring that engages the detent that may be missing or broken.
The key lock also locks the door but, it is NOT the same as the handle lock. You cannot unlock the handle with the key if you pulled the handle up and locked it. Two separate actions inside the one door latch. I also had a how to post on rebuilding the latches.
Yes I know about the door locking from the inside. Learned it by trial and error ! The door latch control on the drivers side has been welded so the latch doesn't slide at all to lock the door on the drivers side. I don't know why this was done from a previous owner. The door handle works fine otherwise, but now that I have a key lock on the passenger side, I want to be able to lock the truck up on both sides. I guess the easiest thing to do is purchase a new door latch control or have some one unweld it if it's possible. It's welded in two places so it's not budging .
I can see how frustrating this is. Is it welded so it can no longer come apart? The bent over tabs that hold it all together still there or welded? I'm not sure how or where it's welded. Maybe like you said, find another. Might still need work but, it will probably come apart.
