Auto locking hubs crapped out

Auto locking hubs crapped out

Well, I almost got in a bind yesterday. Was in some slick stuff and thought I wasn’t coming out. Turns out my front wheels were not pulling.

Did a little investigating and it seems my front hubs did not engage. I locked them in manually and I was able to get out without leaving any paint or body parts in the woods.

I know now this is an ongoing issue with the earlier trucks. Any tips on what to check on the 17 and up trucks? It would look like ford would have figured this out by now.

loosing vacuum at the hubs is the most common problem.

Should be under warranty.

I blew through the warranty about 50,000 miles ago.

Well check the back of the hubs/backing plate. Test your vacuum.

Vacuum pump, actuator valve, vacuum lines down to the hubs, then the hubs themselves. There are two hubs seals inside, the hub that need to be libricated, and holding vacuum. It’s possible you pulled a line, or one is cracked and leaking. In my 2005 it was the hub seals mostly but one time, I had a broken line. That truck was in the bush several times so that will do it. The other issue is are your hubs lubricated properly and are they turning properly, with cpvacuum and manually. Just a process of elimination. Whenever you get an alignment, ball joints etc, have them service the system and ensure it’s working properly if you don’t do the work yourself. When pulled apart, those hub seals should be replaced with new so you don’t have issues when you need it. I usually do the checks and lubrication when doing my caliper pins, cause I have it on jack stands and the tires off anyways.
