Seized Locking Hubs

Back in March while still plowing, my auto locking hubs wouldn't stay engaged. After talking to the local Ford service shop they told me that it was moisture in the vaccum lines and that it had frozen. They told me to manually lock the hubs and bring it in to be repaired when I had time. I made a appointment in the middle of May and finally got it in last week. Now the hubs are seized in the locked position and they will not warranty the work or parts because they say it was caused by the salt from our roads. Does this sound right?

This is a very easy fix. Moreover unless you like the auto feature now is the great time to swap those hubs out for some warn or similar in/out 1/4 turn hubs.

If you wish to keep your auto feature it still is easy fix. There are tons of videos on this. Take apart, clean, reinstall.

Good luck

Sounds like a easy fix but after only buying the truck new 20 months ago and having a warranty for 5 years, really why should I have to repair this problem myself.

Hopefully this will help you:

Edit: I just realized it is a newer truck. I am not sure if this would apply or not, but it is for 99-04 hubs.

well IMO you have two choices. Take to another Ford store and see if they will warrant the work or you can pull your sleeves up and begin being one with the truck.
You obviously drive in harsh enough conditions to seize the hubs, this is something you should learn and do a regular maintenance on by taking then apart and doing a cleaning up of the hub.

As far as warranty...the service advisor was being a *****. A good service writer would have found a way to get them fixed under warranty. Sounds like he just dismissed it altogether as a wear item i.e. brake pads, wiper blades, clutch, etc.

Given how quick you can have them apart and cleaned...and how much hassle you will go through trying to validate your warranty demand with that service writer...or finding a different Ford store and begin the process again without knowing the result, I think you are time and money ahead doing it yourself.

Good luck

If you are in warranty it should be covered. Mine were.
