I know that an np205 transfer case will bolt to the zf manual transmissions if you notch the tail shaft to clear the transfer case shifter linkage. I would assume that the E4OD would have the same tail housing belt pattern. You could also just use the Borg Warner transfer case from the late 80s early 90s although they are not as strong as the np205, but unless you are doing some serious off roading it shouldnt matter. All the trucks that had those transfer cases are still on the road.
If you are looking for better mileage, the later model transfer cases might be better. They are smaller and lighter. They are chain driven as far as I know. Maybe someone else knows more about them.
GV setup is nearing the top of my list of the next things to get done. Would like to get it done over the winter/early spring. I’ve done a ton of searches etc....and I keep coming back to the GV. My mechanic has done a couple on some other vehicles and he said the same thing. Go with the GV.
Just a heads up: I was reading Hot Rod Magazine, and I saw an ad for Tremec which stated that they sell a 4 speed automatic with overdrive. I don't know anything about it beyond that however.
GV are great solutions for some situations, but I wouldn't use them for a couple of reasons. #1, they are way overpriced. #2, they just add stress to your current transmission and non-lockup torque converter, which in turn produces more heat. Heat is the enemy....
You Can get an adapter plate and run an AOD for a lot less than what a GV costs. And you'll have a lockup converter which makes a big difference just by itself.
Build the AOD using 4R70W gear set and internals, you'll have a very strong transmission that doesn't require any electronics, has lockup, a lower first gear, and a higher overdrive ratio.
