Battery lights and wrench’s oh my

Husbands boss has a 2005 Ford F-250 6.0, back story two days ago he was driving and everything started to lose power. He pulled it over and deemed it as a bad alternator. A man pulled him to a nearby gas station and once he got there and sat for about 30 mins truck started back up and he was able to make it home (20 mins). Following morning it breaks down again maybe 7 miles from the house. Same thing, battery light loss of power. Takes the batteries to have them tested one tests bad (bought 3 months ago) so he replaces it. When it starts it’s blowing white smoke out the tail pipe. Following day makes it about 15 miles and breaks down again, this time the battery light was on and off, wrench light, all lights then nothing loss of power. He was able to slowly make it back to town but stopping every 5 or so miles.. boss says to change alternator (hasn’t changed it since he’s had it) so he changes it.. took awhile to crank (very cold outside). Makes it to the part store, they check voltage on both batteries and the alternator.. batteries test good, alternator test bad. Guy at the parts store thinks it could be some bad wiring between the battery and alternator?

Sounds like a person who really needs to take this truck to a dealer because chasing this issue is a black hole of need. I’m sure by now the wrench light is a scream for help by the FICM after trying to keep driving it with a failing electrical system.

It’s a truck where not knowing it mechanically hits the wallet hard, and as an employee it’s best to get out of the way no matter how supportive you are trying to be.

It would be very helpful to have a tool to read the codes and sensors. Any access? Otherwise phones apps like Forscan and an obd2 adapter work great.
Continued driving on low voltage can cause some permanent damage to expensive components.

That is the ICP sensor. It looks cooked and so does the connector/pigtail. It would be wise to have both replaced.

I second the vote to take it in. Probably a number of things wrong (including the FICM as Jack mentioned)
