Sludge cleanse

OK - 1963, 223. Rebuilding head. Machine shop cleaned it up and all is better than average. Shop guy says "somebody took good care of this engine" - valve job to commence. I left the block in the truck. I suspect sludge but don't want to pull and rebuild the block - compression was ok and I'm encouraged by the machine shops assessment that the engine was well cared for in its history (it was a military truck so maybe it had a good motor-pool guy) so I'm hoping that care is evident in the block.

So - what do you guys recommend I do after I button it back up with a new head? I would like to clean it out some. I've read all kinds of stuff about automatic transmission fluid, high vs. no detergent oil, single vs. multi viscosity, zinc additives, oil stabilizers, etc. Before my dad died, he was my consultant on all things mechanical and he always said don't put high detergent oil in an old engine because it would start leaking oil - I don't know how accurate that advice was but that's what he said...

I have the time and the means to pull the oil pan and clean the screen so AFTER that, what do y'all recommend? F-ONE, I'm looking at you but other expert wisdom is so very much appreciated!

as usual: thanks in advance

Ok - my head rebuild is done. Aside from bolting it on and hoping for the best, what can I do to help assure the ole '63 purrs?

The block comes out easy, pull it, put it on a stand and clean it out. It is 50 years old, think about it...

Accurate, but only because it's cleaning the sludge up that's "stopping up" places where it might leak. Easy fix... replace your gaskets/seals (assuming you're on a budget and doing so yourself). Not too savvy on the straight 6 so I apologize if I'm off base on some of the following; but, I'd change the gaskets on the oil pan, timing cover, crank seal, rear main, and I'm sure you've already done the valve cover since your head was rebuilt. Once complete, run any oil best suited for your engine with a little Marvel Mystery Oil, or even Sea Foam, added for the next few oil changes and it will clean her up somewhat internally.

The sludge could be blocking the screen on the oil pick-up in the pan, might be a good idea to pull the block and pull the oil pan off.

Thanks to all for the advice. The oil pan can be dropped without pulling the block or even jacking it up so I did that. There was some solidified sludge at the bottom of the pan but everything else looked good and surprisingly (to me) clean. The screen was also clean. I cleaned everything up and put a new gasket on the pan. All good! Thanks again!
