Engine stalling at idle after fuel bowl filter change. Why?
Hey guys,
I've been away for a few months and the truck has been sitting. I got home and changed the fuel filter in the fuel bowl with a motocraft filter I had purchased 2-3 years ago.
(I also changed the engine oil, put in a new hydroboost and all 4 hydraulc lines for steering and gearbox and put in a new master cylinder at the same time. Its a 2002 with 217k miles.)
Its never stalled before at idle until this filter change. Its stalled 3-4 times now. Once at a traffic light with engine still cold. Took 3 tries to get it to restart and the check engine light came on and then went off immediatelt after firing up. The other 3 times it stalled while parked and warming up.
I didnt drain the fuel bowl when I changed the fuel filter, I only pulled out the old filter, put in the new seals (beveled edge facing up on the large seal) and tightened the cap back up with a hammer and screw driver. I have an auxilliary fuel filter under the chassis. The filter is new.
i know my fuel pressure is good. 64 PSI because I have a gauge.
What did I do wrong?

Is that why most people drain the bowl completely before swapping filters? To avoid trapped air?
I did open the bowl and took a peek and all looked normal. When I put the cap back on it pushed a bunch of fuel out. Didnt do that first time. Bowl wasnt as full.

Is it normal for it to do that after a filter change?

Best practice is to purge it after a filter change by cycling the pump 5 times. The only reason to drain is to avoid a mess in the engine valley when you displace the fuel by sticking the new one in the full bowl. Also allows you to examine the bowl for rust, and the heating element in there. Remember to purge the air out next time and you won't have the issue again.
