74 F100 with a 360 engine. Starter works fine and cranks engine well. Problem is, after it starts, and for just a split second, I can hear the bendix gear hit the flex-plate. Just makes a slight noise, but I'd like to get rid of the noise.
My understanding is you don't shim these Ford starters. But, it seems like the gear is possibly too close. Are there times when you DO shim a Ford starter or (besides replacing the starter), is there anything else you can recommend I should do?
Again, I can live with it and it cranks every time. It's just that split second noise I'd like to eliminate.
We never used to have to shim them, but they make shims now for the Windsor family of engines. Never seen one for an FE, but that does not mean it does not exist.
But my first thought would be that it's just an old tired starter and needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
If it's a newer starter, it's even more likely to be buggered and needing replacement. I say that because we often run into defective starters these days, even when they're brand new.
Good luck. That's all I've got for suggestions because I've been pretty lucky with starters so far. So no experience with fixing gremlins.
