Mechanic said he looked with a scope and the rods did not have balance pads.

Had a chance to compare both rods and I don't think the new one is stronger. From the side, the old rod looks narrow compared to the new rod. But the new rod looks very skinny
from the other angle while the old rod looks much beefier. Looks like each rod has the same amount of metal but is just a different design from a different manufacturer. In other words the new rod is just cheaper.

This entire rod situation is confusing...if my vin starts with HEC that means I have the new style rods correct?

It's the last five numbers. Must be a larger number than 90000.
For instance mine is GEA95755

Correct. You will have the larger rods.

But.....if your truck is a 2016 with a 90000+ vin it will still have the older rods yes?

i have HEC64731 build date 1/3/17 so i do believe i would have the "bigger" rods
this correct
@UGA33 ? "If you have a VIN of HEAxxxxx to HEB89999, it will have the smaller rods. HEB90000+ will have the bigger rods."
