First post on here. Not sure if this is the right spot to post this, but I have a 1976 f250, 4x4 with power steering. Would anybody have any idea on how long the driver side tie rod should be? The new one I ordered is 5 inches which is like 2 or 3 inches shorter then the one that was on it.
just put new tie rods on my '75 and the drivers side was quite a bit longer than 5" i had to buy mine from summit. got the adjustment sleeve from o'reilly's however.
Thanks guys! Now when you put ur tie rods on ur 75. How much space was in between the two rods inside the sleeve. Any idea? Or should they be together?
The space in between depends upon setting the toe-in. The rods will be in the neighborhood of 1 1/2" in the sleeve. If you're not familiar with setting the toe, a trip to an alignment place would be needed.
Yea deffiently getting an alignment! Just want to see if I can make the 5 inch work or not. The 7 inch was cranked up all the way leaving no space in the Sleve between the two. Also the passenger tie rod was really bent.
A carpenters rule will check alignment close enough to make it to the alignment shop. Measure front and rear of the tires using the edge of the sidewall or a consistent tread feature. Measure in front of the tires should be 1/8" to 1/4" less than the rear (means 1/8"-1/4" toe in). If you can get there with some adjustment left, should be OK to take it to the alignment shop.
