I just bought a 97 Ranger a couple months ago and I'm unhappy with the amount of pressure required to push down the accelerator pedal. I took my Dremel and cut about 5/8 inch off the spring that is at the end of the cable(on throttle body)but that didn't seem to have much effect. My Kia Rio requires half as much pressure to mash down the pedal as the Ranger. Anybody else tried to reduce the amount of pressure on their accel pedal?
After lubing the cable, get a new spring. Contrary to what many people believe, cutting a spring actually INCREASES the pressure to compress the spring.
The cable wire seems to be sliding inside its sheath fine. There seems to be 3 springs in the system. One under dash pulling the accel pedal back to the "up" position, one at the end of cable on throttle body, and one wrapped around the butterfly shaft.Nothing I can do about that last one of course. If a person could find springs matching the first 2 in length and diameter I believe that would reduce resistance at the pedal. As long as the butterfly closes completely I don't see the harm? Shame on Ford for assuming everybody in the world has a strong right foot/leg.
