My check engine light came on yesterday in my 99 Ranger 3.0,... I took it to Auto zone for a test and they gave me a diagnostic code # of - P0402 - EGR Valve - Excesive Flow. The part is $49 dollars, not a big deal, but I was wondering,......first of all if this is something I can change out myself,...? And when I do, will the check engine light go out on it's own, or will I have to pay ford or someone else to reset it ? What does the EGR Valve do any way, and how important is it I change it right away,...?
Any help any one could give would be greatly appreciated !
Which part did they sold you, the EGR Valve or the EGR Pressure Sensor? Make sure they gave you the later (EGR Pressure Sensor). I had the same code on my 95 Ranger and they sold me the EGR Valve, that didn't do it, ended up buying the EGR Pressure Sensor.
BTW the replacement takes about 5-10 min and a little elbow grease, a DIY.
Also forgot to mention, to clear the code, remove the negative cable from the battery for at least 10 minutes. That will do it, or take it back to Autozone and they will erase the memory.
